Contact the pressure experts at WIKA USA for more information about the MG-1 and other pressure solutions for medical, health, and safety applications. Anesthesia machines receive medicinal gases and accurately distribute the flow and pressure of each gas according to the needs of the patient, these settings are usually inserted manually. Mindray was initially unable to reproduce the issue using the specific Kalispell LAN settings provided, but upon further examination of Kalispell’s network topology, Mindray was able to recommended specific LAN switch settings that would disable any switch port that received network broadcast or multicast traffic at a rate that would cause Mindray’s A5 or DPM 7 systems to shut down. An understanding of specific equipment functionality and conducting the recommended pre-use pressure, leak, and flow tests will assist the anesthesia provider in identifying rare untoward events such as complete occlusion of an expiratory limb of a disposable breathing circuit. It is not the intention of APSF to provide specific medical or legal advice or to endorse any specific views or recommendations in response to the inquiries posted.

However, this material is provided only for informational purposes and does not constitute medical or legal advice. Individual or group responses are only commentary, provided for purposes of education or discussion, and are neither statements of advice nor the opinions of APSF. The administration of anesthesia also requires the delivery of multiple drugs that are chosen based on the individual patient's condition and the procedure type and duration. We understand that other manufacturers’ machines respond in a similar fashion, and we would suggest that, in general, future anesthesia machine designs incorporate airway pressure measurements within the breathing circuit rather than in the absorber behind the one-way valves where the pressure transducer is isolated from the breathing circuit. Perhaps if we purchase “modular” machines we can allow for updates in the future and extend the life of our expensive machines. Additionally, Mindray will make software enhancements to strengthen the network interface and will continue to develop and incorporate, where possible, future product and software enhancements to provide additional protection against unanticipated broadcast or multicast traffic, as our goals include providing the safest and most reliable products possible. Our department was recently contacted to investigate a possible issue in the Datascope AS3000 Anesthesia System (Mindray North America, Mahwah, NJ), which is one of the manufacturers of anesthesia machines that measure breathing circuit pressure only in the expiratory limb.

However, it is also possible that unbalanced absorption of ketamine and dexmedetomidine following IM administration might have resulted in an exaggerated Stage 2 plane of anesthesia (involuntary excitement) which appeared seizure-like and the unresponsiveness was due to anesthesia induction. ASA and APSF both recommend the use of videolaryngoscopes instead of typical laryngoscopes in an effort to limit exposure for operating room and anesthesia personnel. Six (6) Mindray A5 anesthesia machines and eight (8) DPM 7 patient monitoring systems were in use delivering anesthesia care at the time of the incident. Caveat 1. Without due care this test causes occupational exposure to nitrous oxide. In all instances, when the expiratory limb was occluded, the Datascope AS 3000 system’s airway pressure gauge showed zero airway pressure while the reservoir bag, used as a test lung, continued to grow larger.  Superstar Medical Equipment  begins at the regulated cylinder supply sources, includes the pipeline sources, and extends to the flow control valves.

Indeed, during the experimental occlusion of the expiratory limb of a circuit, the system indicated zero airway pressure and alarmed for low pressure, when in fact the circuit pressure was independently measured and found to be 63 mmHg. When active systems are used, the patient's airway must be protected from the suction device and positive-pressure buildup of the waste gases; passive systems require only the monitoring of positive pressure. 5. Risk management principles will require the hospital to provide anesthesia machines meeting ASTM standards and complying with the monitoring standards practiced in and acceptable to the anesthesia community, e.g. the ASA standards. The shift of all procedures to ambulatory levels has revolutionized the practice of anesthesia. Furthermore, the rise in surgical procedures and increasing accident and trauma cases serve as the driving factor for the growth of the market. We have two adjoining hospitals, one that functions as an outpatient surgery center, the other an acute care hospital and trauma center. To sate, Sally Field (born November 6, 1946) has won two Academy Awards: one for "Places in the Heart" (1984) and one for "Norma Rae" (1980). Although nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance in Steel Magnolias, she did not win.
